The cob cannot be digested and acts as a physical obstruction in the intestines, which can be fatal2. Pets scavenging in the garbage for discarded cobs are at a high risk for developing intestinal blockages, which typically present with vomiting and diarrhea.

These molds produce aflatoxins, which cause severe liver damage and the rupture of blood vessels46. While cats are less likely to scavenge moldy agricultural corn than livestock or dogs, the toxins are universally dangerous and response to treatment is usually poor.
