Oyster Plant
Tradescantia spathacea
Oyster Plant (Tradescantia spathacea), also known as Moses-in-the-Cradle or Boat Lily, is a common houseplant and garden ornamental that is mildly toxic to cats. It contains calcium oxalate crystals and dermatitis-causing compounds in its sap. Skin contact with the plant or ingestion can both cause reactions.
Important Notes
Toxic compounds: calcium oxalate crystals and irritant compounds in the sap; the vivid purple undersides of leaves contain higher concentrations
Mechanism: calcium oxalate crystals cause mechanical irritation to the oral and GI mucosa; sap contact causes contact dermatitis
Symptoms: drooling, vomiting, diarrhea; skin or eye contact with sap may cause redness, irritation, or rash
The ornamental purple-and-green leaves make this a popular houseplant — keep it out of cat reach
Symptoms are usually mild; rinse any sap off skin with water and consult your vet if GI symptoms persist
