Morning Glory
Ipomoea spp.
Morning Glory (Ipomoea spp.) is a climbing vine with vibrant funnel-shaped flowers that is mildly toxic to cats. The seeds contain ergine (d-lysergic acid amide), a naturally occurring psychoactive compound related to LSD, along with other indole alkaloids. While the flowers and leaves carry much lower toxin levels, the seeds represent the primary hazard.
Important Notes
Toxic compounds: ergine (d-lysergic acid amide) and related indole alkaloids; concentrated in seeds
Mechanism: ergine acts on serotonin receptors in the CNS, causing altered neurological function; seeds also contain tannins that cause GI irritation
Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, drooling; seed ingestion may cause disorientation, agitation, dilated pupils, or tremors
Seeds are the most dangerous part; flowers and leaves cause mainly GI upset
Contact your vet if your cat ingests seeds or shows neurological symptoms
