Rubber Plant
Ficus elastica
Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) is a popular large-leafed houseplant in the Ficus genus that is mildly toxic to cats. Like other Ficus species, its milky latex sap contains ficin (a proteolytic enzyme) and irritant compounds. Skin or eye contact with broken stems releases sap that causes local irritation and dermatitis.
Important Notes
Toxic compounds: ficin enzyme and irritant compounds in the milky latex sap
Mechanism: ficin irritates mucosal membranes and the GI lining; sap causes contact dermatitis
Symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, drooling from ingestion; skin or eye redness if sap contact occurs
The large attractive leaves may tempt cats; breaking leaves or stems releases the most irritating sap
Symptoms are usually mild; wipe sap off skin promptly; contact your vet if GI symptoms are severe
