Spider Plant
Chlorophytum spp.
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum spp.) is generally considered safe for cats and is not listed as toxic by the ASPCA. However, spider plants contain compounds with mild hallucinogenic properties related to opium (similar in structure but much weaker than true opioids). This can cause cats to act intoxicated and nibble the plant repeatedly.
Important Notes
Classified as non-toxic, but contains mild hallucinogenic compounds that may attract cats
Symptoms if eaten excessively: mild GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea), apparent intoxication or unusual behaviour
The mild attraction effect is why some cats repeatedly chew spider plants despite GI upset
Not a medical emergency; limit access if your cat obsessively chews the plant
No veterinary treatment required for typical small-amount nibbling

Toxicity can vary based on the substance, amount, plant part, and individual cat. If you think your cat may have been exposed to a toxic substance, contact a veterinarian right away.
